In Cluj-Napoca, ACTEDO dedicated the month of November to human rights and anti-discrimination. Two training sessions, with identical content and format, Pro Bono for Human Rights, were organized on November 14th-15th and 28th-29th at Ramada Hotel in Cluj. The two sessions were aimed at strengthening lawyer's abilities to tackle human rights violations and discrimination cases. All in all, 40 lawyers from Cluj, Mureș and Bistrița-Năsăud counties participated in our interactive sessions, lead by our partners, The Centre for Legal Resources (CRJ): Georgiana Iorgulescu (executive director) and Delia Niță (coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination programme within the same NGO).
During the four intense days, participants discussed and analysed various topics, including national and European instruments for sanctioning discrimination, the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights, representative cases in this fields, such as Moldovan and others against Romania, Thlimmenos against Greece, etc., but also the dynamics of discrimination. In addition, Associate prof. Radu Chiriță insisted on the importance of putting pressure on national courts to safeguard fundamental rights and build a nurturing juridical culture, which protects citizen from state abuses. Furthermore, Associate prof. Liviu Harosa passionately supported pro bono work and invited the participants to join him in creating a community of lawyers dedicated to assuring that the most vulnerable citizens have access to justice.
The two training sessions were very successful, as many lawyers officially joined ACTEDO's Pro Bono Network for Human Rights, whose official opening will take place on the 17th of December 2014. Stay tuned for more details!
